Israel to Palestinians: ditch Hamas, UN state bid

May 24 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, outlining his peace vision on Tuesday, urged the Palestinian leadership to shun Islamist group Hamas and shelve efforts to win U.N. statehood status unilaterally.
"I say to President Abbas 'Tear up your pact with Hamas and sit down and negotiate, make peace with the Jewish state,'" Netanyahu said in an address to the U.S. Congress, referring to a recent powersharing deal between Hamas and the Fatah faction of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
"The Palestinian attempt to impose a settlement through the United Nations will not bring peace. It should be forcefully opposed by all those who want to see this conflict end," Netanyahu said.
"Peace cannot be imposed, it must be negotiated."
